Highgate Cemetery
A shortlisted design competition proposal for the redevelopment of Highgate Cemetery.
Highgate Cemetery is one of the world’s finest examples of the picturesque garden cemetery. This project provides improved visitor facilities and accommodation for staff, volunteers and equipment, and conserves existing heritage assets.
Our approach draws together the two halves of the Cemetery more closely, locating new buildings encountered on journey through and around the Cemetery. Buildings and views are placed to move you around the Cemetery and create different journeys. The routes and new buildings accommodate the different activities within the Cemetery: a place to visit to enjoy its landscape, heritage and architecture, a place of burial and memorial, a place to work.
