Alun will be talking about the influences and ideas behind our RIBA award winning Maggie's Centre Cardiff on Thursday 2nd December.

Wyn has worked for the practice for five years, and been involved in a number of the practice's key projects during that time, including Grand Junction at St Mary Magdalene, Paddington; Bevis Marks Synagogue and Maggie's Cardiff. Today we are celebrating making him an associate.

Building on the Built aims to promote the topic of architectural work connected with existing structures, more specifically, to look at work that challenges the way in which work on existing structures is approached today. The focus is on work that celebrates an alternative to pure architecture, work that is evolving, mongrel and collaborative with time. The talk will focus on the Boase Street project, a sensitive conversion of a house in Cornwall.

The prize is given to the best examples of projects with a construction budget of less than £1 million in the UK each year. The prize was set up in 1998 in memory of Stephen Lawrence, who was on the road to becoming an architect when he was tragically murdered in 1993.

The project reflects the mission the Parish has within its community. The renovation and extension of the church is intended to serve and support a growing congregation and a variety of organisations and stake holders that worship, work and play at St Anselm.
As well as renovating the fabric of the building and finally making the Church and its surroundings fully accessible, the most considerable part of the project looks at hosting a series of new uses within the liturgical east end of the nave in a new three-storey structure built inside the church.

The judges said that everything about the project, from the moment you enter the front courtyard and throughout the building helps to induce a feeling of well being, familiarity and safety.  It has had a huge impact on the community locally and regionally. The heart of the building is the Cwtch (Welsh for small comforting space or cuddle) and this sums up what Maggie’s delivers.

The award is given to buildings that create an architecture for the common good. Winning projects demonstrate a clear social purpose that enhances the lives of people and effectiveness of communities, or an ambitious environmental agenda, reuse and recycling buildings. 

The key aim of our project in Paddington was to revitalise the church so that it could regain its place as the social heart of the community. Throughout the project we engaged with the community through creating volunteer deign groups who contributed to the design of the building; held art workshops where the community could create tiles which would be used in the building as part of an artwork by Linda Florence; and held open days to bring people in to the church and learn about what was going on. Whilst on site we had scaffold tours; the neighbouring school buried a time-capsule; and on site volunteers contributed to the restoration of the church itself.

Work is progressing on our new heritage annexe at St. Mary Magdalene Paddington. We celebrated topping out at the end of November, and the metallic glazed terracotta cladding is now on site.

Biba gave a lecture at the Glasgow School of Art.

Work on our new cancer care centre for Maggie’s at Velindre Hospital in Cardiff is nearing completion. Our bespoke ceramic signage by Pat O'Leary has just been installed.

Work has begun on site on our Harbour Heights project, which refurbishes a 1950s three-storey house overlooking Newlyn Harbour, Cornwall.

We are delighted to share that our project at Becket Hall Day Nursery, Bristol, has received planning permission, and work will start on site in summer 2019.

Alun gave a lecture at the The Architectural Models Network's event, Shaping Space – Architectural Model Making in Contemporary Practice at the Building Centre, sharing perspectives on model making and the role it plays in the design process.

Biba attended the GIA Design Awards as guest head judge and speaker; a wonderful evening celebrating Glasgow’s architecture.

The redevelopment project at St Mary Magdalene’s church in Paddington has won the 2018 King of Prussia Gold Medal, awarded for innovative, high quality church conservation or repair work projects. The award goes to Caroe Architecture Ltd for their work to bring back to life the architectural and decorative quality of this Gothic Revival masterpiece by the great Victorian architect G E Street; which combines architecture, sculpture, stained glass, and arguably the most remarkable painted ceiling in an English parish church.

Biba spoke at Norwich University of the Arts as part of the Diverse Practices lecture series.

We are absolutely delighted that the Garden Museum has won an AJ Retrofit Award in the Museums & Galleries category!

Jury comment: “The jury was impressed by the scheme’s finesse, experiential richness and the sensitive way in which it relates to the existing site and historic fabric. The scheme skilfully stitches together different spaces and activities, unified by the tranquil, green presence at its heart.”

We are delighted to announce that we have won two design competitions for new projects in London. We will be working on Bevis Marks, the oldest synagogue in the UK, to improve access, interpretation, collection displays and functionality. We have also been chosen to work with London Cyrenians to progress their Hidden Homes Programme, which provides housing in London for people who may be homeless, have a learning disability or a mental health need.

We are so delighted and proud that Clare Sturges of Brightest Films has been nominated for a BAFTA Cymru for her short flim 'My Brief Eternity: Ar Awyr Le'. Clare's film follows the late artist Osi Rhys Osmond as he went about making a piece of work for our Maggie's building in Cardiff in the last weeks of his life. Osi talks about his approach to making work which is seeped in memory and place, and offers a profound and uplifting insight into living with cancer. Clare's film vividly records Osi's spirit and his sharp observations, and the BAFTA Cymru nomination is a tribute to them both.

On April 28, the Welsh School of Architecture and the Design Commission for Wales is hosting the Getting Things Done Symposium at the Pierhead, Cardiff Bay with invited experts from Vorarlberg, Austria and the UK, including exhibition curator, Wolfgang Fiel, Dow Jones Architects, Proctor Matthews Architects and Architype, will inspire discussions about the culture of landscape, materials, craft, environment, place and identity.

Biba Dow will be taking part in 'The Cultural Significance of Architecture: In Memory of Dalibor Vesely' at Emmanuel College, Cambridge on Monday 11th April.

We are giving a tour of the crypt at Christ Church at 11am on Saturday 19th December. Places can be booked through the Archtiecture Foundation website.

The crypt is published in the final 2015 edition of the Architects' Journal.

After 15 months on site, the crypt at Christ Church is finished. After a 10.30am thanksgiving service in the church on Saturday 7th November, the Bishop of Stepney Adrian Newman will bless the crypt, and the crypt will be open until 4pm.

An exhibition opens at Swansea College of Art on 26th November to celetrate the work of artist Osi Rhys Osmond, who died in March. Osi made a painting for our Maggie's building which was the subject of a documentary by Clare Sturges, who has since won a Breakthrough Award Bafta. Clare's film about Osi will be screened on 26th November and we will be talking about our project at the exhibition opening.

Nicholas Thistlethwaite's 'The 1735 Richard Bridge Organ in Christ Church Spitafields' has been published by the Friends of Christ Church Spitafields. The book focuses on the unique history of the organ as well DJA's most recent restoration work. 

Dow Jones Architects have received the RIBA award for best new build for the Sett project in the Isle of Wight. 

On the 17th of April Alun Jones and Cleve West will be giving a joint lecture entitled 'The Healing Presence of Gardens' as part of the RHS' events programme. Alun will be drawing on DJA's proposal for the Maggie's Center in the Velindre Cancer Care hospital in Cardiff. 

Biba Dow has been invited by Princeton University to talk at a conference focusing on the role of urban waste treatment facilities within the city.  Biba will be drawing on DJA’s research project ‘Rubbish in Resources Out’ which identified new concepts of dealing with London’s domestic waste.

'Beyond Walls' is an exhibition which documents the first stage of DJA's work to Hawksmoor's Crypt at Christ Church, Spitafields. David Grandorge's photographs represent a significant moment in the building’s history: they are the only photographs of the crypt as a singular, undisturbed space. Starting from the 10th December the exhibition will be open to the public. 

On the 6th of December Dow Jones Architects will be presenting their latest design iterations for the renovation of Durning Library to local residents in Kennington. This is part of the Building Exploratory's wider public programme for the library which includes Linda Florence's latest art installation and exhibition.

Garden Museum Phase 2 has received full planning consent from Lambeth Council. 

Dow Jones Architects have been commissioned by Lambeth Council to carry out an options appraisal on the Durning Library in Kennington.

Dow Jones Architects have submitted their design for the Maggie's Center Cardiff for planning. The new centre will be built within the grounds of the existing Velindre Cancer Care hospital in Cardiff. The Dow Jones Architects-designed centre will be built from the same sandstone as the nearby hills and will feature an interior lined with cedarwood.

Alun Jones has been invited to act as an external examiner at De Montfort University School of Architecture.

Dow Jones Architects have been appointed to design a private villa on the Greek island of Corfu. The house sits in an olive grove beside an existing house which we are restoring.

Dow Jones Architects are thrilled that our project 25 Tanners Hill, following winning an RIBA London Regional Award in June, has been shortlisted for the RIBA Stephen Lawrence Prize 2013.

Alun Jones will be taking part in a seminar run by timber specialists Eurban at The Building Centre as part of The London Design Festival. The morning seminar, entitled 'Post Brutalism' will discuss the fundamental role of structure and materials in contemporary architectural practice. Thursday 19th September, 9.30am

Tanners Hill has won a RIBA Award 2013 in the London Regional category.

The Royal Academy of Arts have chosen to exhibit Dow Jones Architects concept model for the competition winning second phase of the Garden Museum in their annual Summer Exhibition in Piccadilly.

Dow Jones Architects have won the competition for the phase 2 expansion of the Garden Museum. The project entails the extension of the raised timber gallery space within the church and the building of a cloister and pavilion framing garden and the tomb of John Tradescant. The practice won the invited competition for the first phase in November 2007.

Tanners Hill has been shortlisted for the RIBA Awards 2013 in the London Regional category.

Dow Jones Architects has completed the refurbishment of a seventeenth century house in Deptford, South London.

Dow Jones Architects has been chosen to design a Maggie’s centre in Cardiff. We are in the process of working with Maggie’s and the staff at Velindre to find a suitable place for the new building on the site.

Nicholas Hawksmoor: Architect of the Imagination has opened at the Royal Academy in the Architecture Space and includes our project for the crypt at Christ Church Spitalfields.

Dow Jones Architects' project for a new church and school in Ethiopia is being developed for construction.

Our exhibition of the work of John Martin opens at Tate Britain on Wednesday 21st September.

Organised in partnership with the Laing gallery, Newcastle, this is the first major exhibition dedicated to Martin’s work in over 30 years. It brings together his most famous paintings of apocalyptic destruction and biblical disaster from collections around the world, as well as previously unseen and newly-restored works.

Hugely popular in his time, Martin was derided by the Victorian Art establishment as a ‘people’s painter’, for although he excited mass audiences with his astounding scenes of judgement and damnation, to critics it was distasteful. In a sense ahead of this time, his paintings – full of rugged landscapes and grandiose theatrical spectacle – have an enduring influence on today’s cinematic and digital fantasy landscapes.
