Cardigan Hospital
An invited design competition proposal for the redevelopment of the former Cardigan Memorial Hospital in Wales.
This project redevelops the former Cardigan Memorial Hospital site to provide new zero-carbon residences and office accommodation for Wales & West, a large Welsh housing association. This is a prominent riverside site located on the primary route into the town of Cardigan, and was redeveloped by renowned architect John Nash in 1789.
We have imagined the site as a sequence of garden spaces with buildings set within them. This refers to the prevailing interest in the picturesque at the time that Nash made the original house and influenced his work. We are interested in how we can make spaces that reflect the scale and character of the old town of Cardigan and make an urbanism that reflects the nature of the town, with stone paving, lanes and connecting views.
